Built by two European expats who missed the sport they loved, the Tallahassee Tarpon brought underwater rugby to Florida's capital — training in FAMU's pool and proving the sport has a home in the Sunshine State.

Our Story

Imported from Europe,
Planted in Tallahassee

In spring of 2019, two European transplants bumped into each other in Tallahassee and discovered they shared the same unusual passion — underwater rugby. Mischa Steurer, who played for 15 years in Austria and Switzerland, and Joerg Hess, a German expat, immediately started building something from scratch.

Joerg's connection to FAMU's aquatics program opened the pool doors. Mischa handbuilt the first baskets from PVC pipe. They put out feelers, found willing swimmers, and within a year had 12 regular players — men and women both — getting full-body workouts twice a week in the deep end.

Today the Tallahassee Tarpon are one of three underwater rugby clubs in Florida, bringing the sport to Florida's capital city and proving that if you build it, the divers will come.

15 years of competitive UWR in Vienna and Zurich before moving to the US in 2001. Hand-built the club's first baskets from PVC pipe and rubber mats.
Joerg Hess
Co-Founder · Germany
Ordered the first balls direct from Germany. Leveraged his FAMU connection to secure pool time and get the club off the ground.

Equipment is provided for first-timers. If you can swim, you can try it. The club is always looking for new members.
